Hi, this is Courtney with AST and I’m back for another Whiteboard Wednesday.

It’s great to see a list of features a certain tool has, but it’s even better when you can see those features in action and in a real-world context. That’s what we’re going to do today with the AST Smart Player.

Let’s consider it from a student’s point of view. We’ll use Katie as an example. Let’s say Katie’s teacher mentioned in class that dopamine will be included on her next test.

Katie might remember the subject being mentioned in a specific video but doesn’t quite know what it means. It would be a waste of time to rewatch the whole video so it would be great if she could just skip to the part where she knows the term is mentioned. Luckily for Katie, her teacher had the video captioned and uses the Smart Player on the school’s learning platform.

Katie can just type in the term she’s looking for and search. Now she can see everywhere dopamine is mentioned, highlighted both on the play bar and in the transcript.

She can click on the term to begin playing the video a few seconds before that term is mentioned.

Now Katie knows what dopamine is but may want a little more information to spark her memory, so she chooses show definition from dictionary. After she’s read the definition she can use the encyclopedia look up for an even more in-depth answer.

Having found all this information on dopamine, Katie may want to share the information with her classmates. She uses the clip and share to shorten the video to include just the part about dopamine, then she copies the link and emails it over to her classmate. Katie can also send the link out as a tweet to help any other classmates that may need it.

So now you can see how valuable a tool the Smart Player is for students in any educational context. There are so many ways to interact, which makes the SmartPlayer such an essential tool for Universal Design.
