ADA 101

The Americans with Disabilities Act is a 1990 law prohibiting discrimination against people with disabilities in the United States. The government applied major revisions to the law in 2010. State and local governments also have more specific rules. Remove common barriers

Additionally, Section 508 is an important amendment to The Rehabilitation Act to consider. It protects the right of people with disabilities with equal access to electronic and information technology. It sets standards that must be followed by every organization that receives federal contracts or funding, and educational institutions that receive funding via the Assistive Technology Act. A quick compliance checklist

  • Are there text equivalents for every photo, image, logo or other non-text element on your website and pages?
  • Are you sure your pages don’t flicker at a frequency greater than 3x/second, which keeps seizure triggers in mind? 
  • Can online forms on your site be filled out with assistive technology versus requiring the keyboard or mouse to be used?
  • Have you considered color contracting to make sure those with vision impairments can view your materials?
